Where, when and how to comment
We started introducing bin hubs across the city in a phased approach from November 2021. We have worked in partnership with colleagues and stakeholders to ensure we are making these changes effectively and efficiently. In areas with controlled parking zones, we need to secure Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) to make the changes.
By May 2024, we have completed the installation of around 1,200 bin hubs within phases 1, 2, 3, 4 and A and implemented increased collection frequencies. More information for each phase is provided below the map - click on your area for more details - you can find your street with the search icon in the top right corner.
- Phase 1: Leith and surrounding areas
- Phase 2: Gorgie, Roseburn and Corstorphine
- Phase 3: Inverleith, Hillside, Broughton and Marchmont
- Phase 4: Southside, Newington, Prestonfield and some parts of Stockbridge and Canonmills
- Phase A: Portobello, Newhaven South, Trinity, Forth and other areas
A small number of locations in phase 4 are still to have their bin hubs installed, due to later TROs or engagement feedback. These will be completed in 2025. More specific timelines for these will be confirmed in early 2025, which depend on the TRO progress.
A revised was approved by Councillors in May 2023 and many of the location changes from this are due in 2025.
In November 2024 a further update to the review framework was made, which resulted in changes to some of the requirements, to allow more flexibility. It was agreed by Councillors that any bin hub to be considered for a change should be in place for 12 months.
Phase 5 – World Heritage Site and City Centre
This includes the World Heritage Site of the Old Town and New Town, where bin hubs will be introduced in a limited number of streets. The locations of the proposed bin hubs are shown in the map.
